What is Preventative Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry is an aspect of dentistry in which the importance of oral hygiene is highly re-enforced. At Image Dental OC, we want to see you smile. We strive to help you meet your expectations in dentistry, which is why we encourage all of our patients to make sure they are taking proper care at home and following some common preventative dentistry protocols for healthy teeth and gums.

The real reason why? To save you from spending thousand of dollars on correcting issues that would have never occurred had you have adopted preventative dentistry measures early on.

Strategies For Preventative Dentistry

Home Care

The most beneficial action you can take in preventing any issue with the mouth is standard care at home. It’s nothing you haven’t heard of before, either.
  1. Brush twice a day (morning and night) for roughly 2 minutes each session. That’s 4 minutes of your day that should be considered an investment.
  2. Floss twice a day (at the very least floss every night).

Fluoride

Controversy lies amongst the use of fluoride in dentistry, but continuous studies have shown its efficacy in preventing tooth decay. We encourage our patients to use fluoride-based toothpastes for cavity protection.

Foods/Drinks

We recommend avoiding carbohydrates or sugar found pre-dominantly in processed foods. It’s tough to manage for most, but you’ll appreciate the benefits of a well-balanced diet. Calcium intake should be consistent also for strong jaws. A diet weak in calcium may lead to periodontal disease and/or issues with the jawbone.

Dental Visits

Many issues with our mouth happen behind the scenes. Why? Because we only take action when we feel pain. However, by regularly visiting your dentist you can approach problems before they arise. It saves you time, money, and suffering.

Most insurances cover 2 dental visits every year. Check with your insurance company to see exactly what they will cover for regular maintenance.

If the issue is you’re afraid of the dentist, you’ll be happy to know we offer safe sedation dentistry options so that you can stay relaxed the whole way through. We’re here to help you.

Staying Educated

It’s psychological, but if you know and understand the outcomes of what happens when you do not take preventative measures, then you will be more incentivized to make sure it does not happen to you. During your regular dental visit, ask the dentist any questions or curiosities you have and they will be happy to educate.

“Preventative Dentistry is absolutely necessary for optimal oral health. Simply visiting your dentist is not enough.”
