Dental checkups and cleanings should we scheduled with us at least once every six months. You may practice great hygiene, brushing twice or more a day, flossing at least once a day, and using mouthwash to rinse, but even with a great hygiene routine you can be at risk for dental problems if you forget to see your dentist. Regular dental exams and cleanings help catch any developing issues before they become less manageable, damaging your teeth, underlying tissues, and bone structure.

During the checkup, we will evaluate your teeth and gums. We will check for signs of decay and chips, the strength of your teeth, the appearance and texture of your gums, and may take x-rays when needed to check for signs of decay invisible to the naked eye. If any cavities are found you may have the choice of getting them cleaned and filled that day or at another appointment. You can take this time to ask our dentists questions about teeth whitening, veneers, orthodontics, or any other questions or concerns you have about improving your smile and biting function. We will be able to answer your questions, give you an idea of what results you can expect and approximate costs from certain treatments based on what we have observed from your exam.

After the exam your teeth will be cleaned my our dental hygienists. They will thoroughly brush, floss, and polish your teeth, letting your rinse with mouthwash. They will also use special tools to perform scaling and debridement- the cleaning of hard and heavy calculus deposits in between the gums and teeth. This is an especially important part of the cleaning process, as this debris cannot be reached with brushes or through flossing.

Exams and cleanings should be kept every six months. These services are covered by most insurance and are necessary for keeping your teeth healthy and functional. The more often the appointments are kept while practicing a regular and thorough hygiene routine, the lower your chances of developing any more serious problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease. So don't forget to schedule your appointment with us. We hope to see you soon!
